Connections for Success: Co-Curricular Strategies to Enhance Student Belonging and Engagement

Fostering a sense of belonging is crucial for student retention and success in an international education context. The research has underscored a strong correlation between a sense of belonging and positive outcomes for students, including heightened academic confidence, elevated motivation levels, increased engagement, and broader psychological benefits such as improved well-being and mental health. At Monash College, the student leadership program has emerged as a key initiative, cultivating a deep sense of connectedness and self-assurance among the student body. The program is strategically co-designed with students to develop their skills and foster a supportive student community. The presentation delves into the lived experiences of students who have actively participated in the program, successfully transitioned to Monash University, and even secured casual employment with the College.


Biography:

Michael brings over 7 years of experience in education, student engagement, and welfare. His extensive background in international education and tourism sectors has given him a deep understanding of the diverse international student market. Martina’s passion lies in Education, having taught Gifted & Talented students and worked in Student Wellbeing. After teaching Geography at Raffles Institution in Singapore and serving as Year Head and Assistant Department Head, she joined Monash College in 2016. Martina progressed to Team Leader in 2017 and was appointed Manager of U18 Guardianship Service & Student Welfare in 2022.
