In today’s academic world, it’s essential to help students feel engaged, connected, and part of a community for their well-being and success. Student mentors and peer supporters play a crucial role in welcoming new students, providing guidance in a safe and structured environment.

Unlike the unpredictable nature of social media, this safe space allows new students to make friends, explore shared interests, and get support, all under the supervision of university staff. Peer mentors, who are fellow students, offer relatable advice and support, helping newcomers navigate university life. Their shared experiences build trust and camaraderie, which are key to creating a supportive community.

This presentation will use case studies from two major Australian universities to show how effective peer mentoring enhances student engagement and satisfaction, which are important for keeping students enrolled. We will highlight the significant impact of cultivating a connected student community and the importance of providing a safe and nurturing environment for new students.
