International Student Essentials – a new approach to orientation and transition

The National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018 discusses the importance of orientation and the provision of specific information to safeguard students’ wellbeing and prepare them for their life and studies in Australia (Department of Education and Training, 2019). Despite our messages to arrive in Melbourne in time for orientation, many commencing students experience delays in travelling to Melbourne and some cannot attend in person sessions resulting in them missing important information.

To address this issue, Monash University developed an interactive suite of modules with information new international students need to ensure an easy transition and a safe and successful time in Australia. These modules are provided to all incoming students who do not attend orientation and while completion is optional, uptake and feedback has been promising.

Created with student input, the modules cover topics from enrolment and preparing to leave home through to common issues experienced by international students and how to solve them. Since their release in February 2023, the modules have been completed by 1552 students and feedback surveys with positive results have been received from 121 students. This indicates that the modules are meeting the aims of providing students with important information on their rights, responsibilities and how to access support as outlined in the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework.
