The Council for International Education: Student Services Working Group

The Council for International Education was established on 18 October 2016. This unique Council is the first of its kind globally. Council membership includes 6 Federal Ministers representing Education and Training, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Tourism and Investment, Jobs and Innovation, Vocational Education and Skills, and Home Affairs. There are currently 9 nationally recognised expert members on the Council with diverse skills and experience.

The Student Services Working Group is a subcommittee of the International Education Council (IEC), made up of key professionals nationally to develop advice for the Council associated with Workplace Exploitation, Pre-Departure Information, Accommodation, Work Integrated Learning and Community Engagement.

Workplace Exploitation has been identified as a key issue facing the International Education Industry.  The Working Group worked hard to provide advice to the IEC regarding the unique role providers play in stamping out workplace exploitation of international students, as well as recognising the key role that employers play.

This presentation will share with delegates the collaborative deliberations from the Student Services Working Group that will form part of an overall report to the Prime Minister and contribute to the work of the Migrant Worker Taskforce. The deliberations from the Working Group will have recommended actions for education providers as well as stakeholders, with the view to improving the overall international student experience and addressing identified concerns.
